Interviews with my book characters: Kylie and Alexa.

What is your name and how old are you?

My name’s Kylie and I’m 24.

What do you carry in your pockets/purse/backpack, etc.?

Oh god, I dread to think what lives in my bag! Not my phone because I’m currently clutching on to it… but my purse, I hope. Oh, and my keys. Apart from that, not much. Maybe a rogue eyeliner as well. And some chocolate!

How do you feel about your home/living space?

It’s nice and cosy, and only a slight fire hazard due to all the fairy lights. The bathroom door could do with a new lock and sometimes the washing machine needs a good kick before it works but generally, I like it.

What early event shaped you the most?

Unfortunately, I had quite the uneventful childhood. It was maybe going to my first music concert. I went to see Britney Spears and there were so many people, more than all the people in my village. It was there that I realised there’s a big world out there.

Where is your favourite place and why?

I don’t know. Here, I guess? I haven’t travelled much. I can barely afford the bus to work when it’s raining! No, but I like the city. It’s busy and exciting.

What are your most important values?

Friendship, adventure, seizing the day… I think.

What emotion/feeling are you afraid to experience?

God, what’s with all the deep questions? I’m afraid of checking my bank balance just before pay day, if that’s anything.

What’s your name and how old are you?

My name is Alexa and I am 25.

What do you carry in your pockets/purse/backpack, etc.?

I always pack my phone, a charger, a notebook, a pen, my purse, spare change, tampons, deodorant, a small bag of make-up must-haves.

How do you feel about your home/living space?

It’s not exactly how I want it. Living with Priya in a rented building means it’s all about compromise. But over the years we have created a space we both enjoy.

What early event shaped you the most?

I don’t like to talk about it, but my parents broke up when I was ten. My dad was controlling and made my mum miserable. Years later, my mum told me that she lost sight of who she was when she was married to my dad, but stayed with him as long as she could for my sake. That was hard to hear. When I moved out to go to university, she moved abroad, finally free.

Where is your favourite place and why?

My bedroom. It’s the only place that’s entirely mine and not half belonging to Priya or anyone else. I’m not obliged to anyone once I shut that door behind me.

What are your most important values?

To be reliable. I try to be a good person and would go out of my way for someone. I don’t hurt people.

What emotion/feeling are you afraid to experience?

Feeling trapped and out of control. Rejection. Feeling alone.
